Artistic Legacy

Artists Alley in Blowing Rock, NC, is a historic enclave that has fostered a vibrant community of artists since the late 1950s. Located just off Highway 221, this neighborhood became home to a close-knit group of creatives who lived and worked alongside one another for over six decades. Notable figures such as Philip Moose, Herb Cohen, José Fumero, Frank Sherrill, Lynn Jenkins, and John Brady contributed to its rich artistic legacy.

In the 1960s, Moose and Brady began the tradition of opening their homes and studios to the public during late summer, an event that became known as the Artists’ Alley Art Show. This tradition highlighted the collaborative spirit and community-building ethos that defined Artists Alley.

To visualize the historical essence of Artists Alley, you might consider visiting the Blowing Rock Art & History Museum (BRAHM), which has hosted exhibitions like "Artists Alley: Building a Creative Community in Blowing Rock," showcasing works and stories from this artistic community Additionally, the Blowing Rock Historical Society offers a gallery of historic photos that capture the town's rich heritage

BLOWING ROCK — When Barbara and David Ballesty moved to Artists Alley, a couple of miles west of downtown, they were not artists.
